Cast lead
Why do you assume that the IDF acted immorally during Cast Lead? You are "concerned", why? What do you rely on for your assumptions? You sound just like Goldstone who has said that the IDF purposely and for no miltary advantage attacked civilian targets. Thanks Hartman Institute for revealing your undisciplined lack of academic integrity.

IDF soldiers
I have live in Israel for a number of years and have spoken to a great deal of IDF soldiers, they are all the guy next door type that was call upon for protect their country. I do not think any of them will commit any form of atrocities.

WAR CODE
Wars are never won by defeating armies, only by destroying civilian areas--sorry to say-first day of bombing Germany 700 planes bombed Hamburg-4500 civilians killed, than Dresdan bombs 24/7 for 6 months, atomic bombs on Japan--the allies won. Korea,VietNam,6 day war,yom kippur war, cast lead war, civilian deaths safeguarded,NO VICTORY

Common Sense
I`m glad to see that, so far, all people who posted their comments have more understanding of modern warfare and certainly more common sense than the author of the article. The purpose of all wars imposed on Israel and its military was always to protect the citizens of the State by eliminating the enemy. Yes, we have to minimize the damage to non-combatants. And no, we can not do everything "possible" to meet this condition. Adopting the latter simply argues against using the military force on the first place. Let`s not forget that the primary goal is to defend the State of Israel against its relentless enemies.

You should be aware of Colonel Kemp`s , An experienced UN Officer, report to the United Nations. With respect Goldstone Report- You can see him addressing the UN on YTUBE. He has nothing but praise for the Israel Army

A moral code to admire
Interesting reading. I admire Israel and IDF for many reasons, and one reason is it`s high moral standards. Another is the self-critical search for truth, which may be the key to the pro-active culture of IDF. This critical search for truth is the exact opposite of the Goldstone report. Any such investigations will of course be used by Israeli enemies, but they are so much lower than your standards. While UN condemned Israel, they ended up as powerless, moral losers.

Perversion of truth
Why do you obfuscate? 1) Goldstone did NOT consider only "one side of the story". 2) Goldstone literally begged Israel to present its side of the story and was refused. Likewise he asked to visit S`derot and again was refused. So what more do you want from this esteemed man? Please stay with the truth !

The Spirit of IDF Ethics Code
"...since it considered only one side of the story..."??? A blatant lie! Was the IDF not literally BEGGED to cooperate and give it`s side of the story? Did Goldstone not request access to S`derot and other Israeli localities? And was denied! Why is this writer distorting the facts ??

obligating them to do everything they can to avoid
If the definition is a simple as put by the article then it is not a workable definition it is also possible to demonstrate that if taken to the extreme it results in an illogical situation. What defines `everything they can`?, It is such a loose definition that unless one wants to start philosophical debates during battle everyone will have a different boundary. At the extreme war will ultimately result in harm to civilians does it mean Israel is never to respond? what is the balance of life of the soldier (citizen of the state) vs everything - what is the degree of risk one takes? ,etc ,etc . The original definition of needless harm while still not clear cut is a much more workable as it places two choices - when they are equal then the least harmful to civilians (the simplest scenario). By setting a poorly defined standard - a standard which at the extreme mean no harm to civilians under any circumstance - it is is casting such a wide net that every action might lead a solider to be out of favor with the definition. Standards need to be workable and also take into account the actions of the opponent. To set a illogically, ill-defined standard and then judge soldiers against it is - is not not justice. It is a race to the highest purity of arms - a race to a utopia of turn the other cheek (or just simply lay down an die) simply to do `everything` to avoid harm to civilians - no matter what are the consequences to the solider or to the country or to the state civilians long term suffering - it is good for a philosophical debate but inherently unfair to soldiers and sate in real life (+given other side does not follow even the basic protection of civilians)

Ethic code
I wonder when all those `erudites" of the H.I. last went into battle, war, military ops etc. I have been serving in various armies and participated in quite a few wars and can attest that the IDS`s concern for the "ethic" aspect of combat is "unparalleled" in the world and probably in the history of warfare (as paraphrased by the British Colonel), even in my view bordering the absurd. War is war, and civilians do get hurt..the best we can do is to try to minimize collateral damage but I would not hesitate to "sacrifice" (a minimum possible) of them to attain my objectives and win the battle!

IDF morality
you should be ashamed of yourself. your condemnation is specious and undermining. you write that "in your heart" you have questions as to the high ethics of the soldiers. your personal thoughts, when negative vis a vis Israeli soldiers should stay in your heart....or better yet, learn how to judge your fellow Jew to the side of merit. you should be ashamed of yourself.

Really
This type of supercillious, arrogant cant is exactly what is undermining the Israeli will to survive.
