The 2013 CLP Study Retreat will focus on the philosophy, theology and vision of Rabbi Professor David Hartman, z”l. We will explore the ways in which Rabbi Hartman’s teachings have enabled, empowered, and shaped modern Jewish thought and life.
The guiding principle of David’s work was to explore and develop new ways in which our 3000-year-old tradition can engage with modern Jewish life and develop new ideas and thinking which are relevant, pluralistic and inspiring. This week-long intensive study seminar, featuring the leading faculty of the Shalom Hartman Institute, will examine and grapple with the big questions that emerge from David Hartman’s writings and teachings:
What is the role of autonomy, creativity and innovation in traditional Judaism?
What is the relationship between Jewish law and the individual conscience?
How do we cultivate a spirit of open-mindedness and pluralism?
What is the theological meaning and consequence of the Modern State of Israel?
How does God shape our moral and political consciousness?
What are the key paradigms for understanding modern Jewish identity?
Join us for an unforgettable journey of study and discovery as we embrace Rabbi David Hartman’s charge to continually struggle with the Jewish tradition and ask what it means to be part of “A Living Covenant.”
Multigenerational Option
This summer, we invite you to bring your post-college children or grandchildren to share this unique learning experience with you. For the first time, a cohort of young adults will experience our summer theme through Jewish text study, philosophical and theological debate, and intimate dialogue with senior Hartman scholars. Participants in the young adult cohort will be full members of the Community Leadership Seminar program, enjoying morning lectures, small group seminars, evening programs, and a full-day excursion in Israel together with all the other participants in the CLP Summer Retreat.
At the same time, the Shalom Hartman Institute will facilitate meaningful interaction between the young adult participants to explore the particular issues of Jewish identity and ethics in their lives. This young adult group will enjoy a combination of cross-generational study and dialogue with community leaders from across North America while also meeting and learning with other young Jewish adults.

Special breakout seminar study session for young adult participants
Professionally facilitated multi-generational dialogue together with parents/grandparents about Jewish identity in the modern world
